The American Camp Association® (ACA)
is aware of an upcoming season of The
Simple Life featuring a camp in California with
the show’s stars acting as camp counselors.
Although the ACA appreciates the exposure
such a show can bring to the camp experience,
we caution parents to understand that the
show is intended to serve as entertainment
only. Some actions depicted in the program
may not be consistent with the values of
some camps, the camp community, and ACA
in particular.
We encourage all parents
to research a camp’s standards and
accreditation status. ACA Accreditation
means that the camp has undergone a thorough
(up to 300 standards) review of its operation — from
staff qualifications and training to emergency
management. ACA collaborates with experts
from the American Academy of Pediatrics,
the American Red Cross, and other youth-service
agencies to assure that current practices
at camp reflect the most up-to-date, research-based
standards in camp operation.
Camps and
ACA form a partnership that promotes growth
and fun in an environment committed to
safety.
